Electrophysiology: Innovative Approaches to Keeping a Steady Beat
Electrophysiology (also known as "EP") is a cardiac subspecialty dedicated to treating heart rhythm disorders. Lankenau employs a multidisciplinary approach for heart rhythm disorders including careful medication management; or one of
our advanced technologies, such as cardiac ablation, implantable defibrillator or pacemaker. Diagnosis and treatment is performed
in our state-of-the-art interventional cardiology suite, two EP labs and two dedicated operating suites.
Lankenau's board-certified electrophysiologists performed 1,449 cases in 2003. Specialties include cryotherapy, radiofrequency ablation, and insertion of pacemakers and defibrillators including biventricular pacers.
Our physicians are constantly involved in research trials to evaluate the effectiveness of new advances in ablation therapy.
Participation in clinical trials allows us to offer the most advanced devices for the most recent indications.
We are one of only a few cardiac centers in the region using Excimer LASER sheaths to extract infected and failed pacemaker/ICD
leads. This procedure is performed in the operating room under general anesthesia with a cardiothoracic surgeon on standby
to emergently treat potential complications.
Diagnostic Electrophysiology Studies:
Tilt Table Testing
Treatment of atrial fibrillation - cardioversion, Pharmacologic agents, and catheter ablation
Catheter ablation and intracardiac mapping complex superventricular and ventricular arrhythmias
Insertion of pacemakers or Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (ICDs)
Pacemaker/ICD Lead Extraction
Biventricular Pacemakers and ICD implantation
In our state-of-the-art interventional cardiology suites, we maintain two fully staffed EP labs and two dedicated operating
suites with advanced technology, offering patients quick, convenient and individualized treatment.
