Bryn Mawr Hospital's Perinatal Testing Center offers the following services and tests:

  • Perinatal Consultation
An evaluation by a perinatologist (a Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist) who assesses the risk for a pregnancy and helps patients plan for the current or future pregnancy.
  • Ultrasound
    Ultrasound
is a non-invasive test which uses sound waves to visualize a fetus in utero.  This simple procedure can be used to help confirm gestational age, monitor growth, identify some abnormalities and evaluate the well-being of the fetus.
  • First Trimester Screening
The latest in prenatal test that utilizes both ultrasound findings and maternal hormone levels to determine if a woman is at increased risk for having a baby with Down Syndrome or Trisomy 18.
  • Doppler Flow Studies
    Doppler
is another technique that uses ultrasound to evaluate the blood flow to the placenta from the fetus and the mother.  This is usually done in conjunction with a complete ultrasound study of the fetus.
  • Tests for the Fetal Well-Being
The Non-Stress Test and Biophysical Profile evaluate how well the placenta is providing oxygen to the fetus.  The information obtained helps determine or predict the well-being of the fetus.
  • Genetic Counseling
A genetic counselor, under the supervision of a perinatologist, is available to consult with patients to assess genetic risk and provide information about various genetic testing options.
  • Chorionic Villus Sampling
This procedure is performed early in a pregnancy by sampling tissue from what will become the placenta.  This is evaluated for possible genetic or chromosomal abnormalities, and can provide reassurance to parents. After the CVS, you should limit your activity the rest of the day. DO NOT exercise or lift anything heavy the day of the procedure.  Specimens take approximately 10-12 days to process.  Questions about the status of your specimen can be answered by calling 1-888-816-3862 x31. (Learn More about this procedure!)
  • Amniocentesis
This procedure is used to obtain amniotic fluid for genetic evaluation and information about fetal development.  After the Amnio, you should limit your activity the rest of the day. DO NOT exercise or lift anything heavy the day of the procedure.  Specimens take approximately 10-12 days to process.  Questions about the status of your specimen can be answered by calling 1-888-816-3862  Ext. 31. (Learn More about this procedure!)
