Bryn Mawr Hospital Breast Center Receives Grants to Benefit Community Women in Fight Against Breast Cancer
Path: Bryn Mawr Hospital <
Bryn Mawr, Pa., August 2008—Most women know that early detection is the key to survival when it comes to breast cancer. The Comprehensive Breast Center at Bryn Mawr Hospital is dedicated to ensuring the community has access to the best detection technology available, and thanks to two grants recently received, totaling $90,000, the Center is able to further advance their commitment to breast health.
The Susan G. Komen Foundation, which awarded the Center $40,000, will allow the Breast Center to teach medically underserved women in the community how to perform self breast exams using the Mammacare method. In addition, the grant will also help women evaluate their risk of developing breast cancer. The Comprehensive Breast Center’s High Risk Program includes infared imaging, OncuVue testing and/or referrals to our genetics counseling for evaluating BVEA 1 and BREA 2. Underserved women needing additional mammograms will be provided one at no cost through the Healthy Women Program.
In addition to the Komen grant, Thomas G. Frazier, MD, Medical Director of the Breast Center, received a $50,000 grant from the Sharpe-Strumia Research Foundation to investigate the benefits of Breast Specific Gamma Imaging, an imaging technique that can aid in the early detection of breast cancer by evaluating the metabolic activity of the breast.
The Comprehensive Breast Center at Bryn Mawr Hospital is located in the former Founder’s Bank Building, 101 S. Bryn Mawr Ave., across from the hospital. The center features the latest technology in breast imaging with state-of-the-art digital mammography, ultrasonagraphy, and MRI. To schedule a mammogram call 610-526-4400. To contact the Breast Care Coordinator, Eileen Ann Morgans, RN, BSN call 610-526-8744.
