Magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, uses high strength magnets to produce images of the human body. The Hospital’s new MRI is manufactured by GE and uses a 1.5T high field strength magnet to produce extremely detailed, high quality images, while also increasing speed for enhanced productivity.

“This machine includes revolutionary technology from GE called ‘excite’ that allows diagnostic information to be received through 8 separate channels. Up until recently only one channel was available with MRI. This advance results in faster scans and clearer, more detailed pictures than what had been possible before,” said Dr. Emma Simpson, Chief Radiologist at the Hospital.

In addition to traditional MRI used to diagnose conditions including tumors, multiple sclerosis, or ligament injuries, the new MRI at Bryn Mawr Hospital will be used for breast imaging and vascular imaging. Using MRI for breast cancer detection will assist in early diagnosis and optimal management of breast cancer, while using MRI for vascular disease detection is safer for patients because it eliminates their exposure to radiation.

The Hospital also renovated a 450 square foot portion of the hospital as a part of the project to serve as the unit’s new reception area and the construction of a connector between the building and the Hospital. The new MRI entrance is located on the ground floor of the Hospital’s B-Wing. Scheduling for both the Bryn Mawr Hospital and Railroad Ave. MRIs will be done through a central number, 610-526-2200.
