BRYN MAWR, PA  (January 2006) - Main Line Health, the non-profit health system that includes Bryn Mawr, Lankenau, Paoli, and Bryn Mawr Rehabilitation Hospitals, is well-known for the quality healthcare it provides the community.  A recent study, however, shows that Main Line Health also brings significant positive economic benefits to local communities, southeastern Pennsylvania, and the entire state.

According to the study, using Main Line Health's Fiscal Year 2005 spending and payroll data, along with a survey of Main Line Health employees and physicians:

  • Main Line Health is responsible for more than 19,000 jobs, directly and indirectly, within Pennsylvania.
  • The economic impact of Main Line Health in 2005 on the State of Pennsylvania was more than $1.2 billion.
  • Main Line Health generated nearly $46.3 million in total state tax revenue in 2005, including $6 million in tax revenue for Chester, Delaware and Montgomery Counties.
  • Main Line Health represented $522.8 million in economic impact in Lower Merion Township and $185 million in economic impact in Willistown Township, the two Townships where Main Line Health hospitals are located.
  • Main Line Health contributed more than $9.8 million in uncompensated care in 2005.
  • Main Line Health employees and physicians donated more than $14.8 million to local charities and provided more than $12.6 million in volunteer services.

The study was conducted by Tripp Umbach, a Pittsburgh-based research firm. In addition to providing economic impact analysis for 2005, the report also projects the economic impact of Main Line Health in 2010 and 2015, reflecting the System’s growth in new facilities and services. For example, the report projects that by 2015, Main Line Health will be directly and indirectly responsible for 25,000 jobs in the state, with an overall economic benefit of $1.5 billion.

Main Line Health has recently announced proposals for new healthcare facilities in Concord Township and Newtown Township, both in Delaware County.  In addition, Main Line Health’s current hospitals are each pursuing expansion and renovation plans to prepare for current and future community healthcare needs.

"Everyone recognizes the healthcare benefits of hospitals," said Jack Lynch, president and CEO of Main Line Health, "but what is often overlooked is how important hospitals and healthcare are to our local economy. This study demonstrates the value of Main Line Health as a contributor to our regions overall quality of life."
