Radiology: Scan Our Capabilities!

Quality imaging provided by board-certified Paoli Hospital radiologists and radiology technologists, combined with easy access and fast and accurate interpretation of radiologic studies, are hallmarks of our radiology services.

At the Main Line Health Center in Collegeville, we provide the most advanced imaging and diagnostic technology and the finest in patient comfort and service. We perform thousands of procedures every year. Physicians from across the Delaware Valley refer their patients to our facility for a variety of imaging services. And from our Collegeville location, we are able to connect to a high-speed network which allows us to share high-resolution images and patient information throughout the entire Main Line Health system, consult with other specialists and deliver prompt, accurate diagnoses.

Digital Mammography
Now women can get a digital mammogram under the supervision of a highly trained Paoli Hospital Radiologist and radiology technologist. Digital mammography, which captures images electronically, offers greater clarity and enables the radiologist to manipulate the image for a more precise diagnosis, while reducing the need for additional call backs. It's truly state-of-the-art and its right here at The Main Line Health Center in Collegeville.

Complementing the physician's findings is the Image Checker® computer-aided detection system, which draws the radiologist's attention to areas that may be abnormal. In effect, the tool gives the radiologist a second look at the mammogram.

CT Scan
A 64-slice CT scan provides an unparalleled window to the inside of the body by combining X-rays and computers. Using a highly focused X-ray beam, CT scans create a set of wafer-thin, cross-sectional images of the body's internal organs, tissues, and structures--much like slices of bread. Accurate to within millimeters in resolution, these 2-dimensional X-ray images are displayed in 3-D on a computer screen for in-depth clinical evaluations. This advanced technology aids in the diagnosis of many cancers and cardiac conditions as well as taking 3-D views of fractured bones.
Ultrasound
Ultrasound is a procedure that uses high-frequency, inaudible sound waves that penetrate the body and "echo" off the internal organs to produce high-resolution images. The returning "echoes" are processed by a computer to produce high-resolution detailed images in real-time a feature that's useful for visualizing movement and intricate details in tissues, organs and blood vessels.

Digital X-Ray
Radiography -- or an X-ray, as it is most commonly known -- is the oldest and most frequently used form of medical imaging. Discovered more than a century ago, X-rays can produce diagnostic images of the human body digitally on a computer screen. X-ray imaging is extremely fast and provides a rapid method of evaluating the entire body -- especially the joints, bones and chest cavity.

At the Main Line Health Center in Collegeville, an experienced Main Line Health Imaging radiologist will analyze your X-ray images and send a report to your primary care or referring physician, who will inform you on your test results. New technology also allows for distribution of diagnostic reports and referral images over the Internet.

DEXA Scan
DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scanning is a simple, painless way to detect whether an individual has thin bones or is at risk for developing fractures. This enhanced x-ray measures bone density of the lower spine and hips and also tracks the effectiveness of treatment for osteoporosis and other conditions that cause bone loss. During the quick procedure, the DEXA machine sends lowdose x-rays through the bones via two energy streams. Two energy peaks are captured -- one absorbed mainly by soft tissue and the other by bone. The difference between the soft tissue amount and total is the bone mineral density.

DEXA scanning has become the most popular osteoporosis and bone density measurement tool because of its accuracy, low radiation exposure, versatility, and cost-effectiveness.

Images are taken digitally and saved to our Picture Archival and Communications System (PACS), a high-definition radiologic technology network. From our Collegeville location, we are able to connect to a high-speed network which allows us to share high-resolution images and patient information throughout the entire Main Line Health system, consult with other specialists and deliver prompt, accurate diagnoses. If you need your films to take to your doctor, we can print them for you or make a CD of them.
