Successful treatment of breast cancer begins with early diagnosis. While monthly physical self-examinations are at the core
of breast cancer detection, mammography can show changes in the breast up to two years before a woman or physician can feel
these changes. The Breast Health Center at Paoli Hospital offers the latest technology and expertise in imaging including:
-
Digital Mammography: Digital mammography captures images and converts them to a computerized display, offering greater clarity and reducing the
need for call backs for additional images.
-
Computer-aided Detection: The R2 ImageChecker System is a computer-aided detection system that analyzes a mammogram using software that highlights
suspicious areas for the radiologist to review more closely. Use of this system can aid in earlier detection of cancer, which
is key to better outcomes.
-
High Resolution Ultrasound: Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to create an image of breast tissue. Ultrasound can often reveal whether a lump
is filled with fluid or is solid. High-resolution scanning provides superior detail for a more accurate and complete analysis
of breast abnormalities.
-
Risk Assessment and Genetics Counseling: The Family Risk Assessment Program for women with a family history of breast and ovarian cancer helps individuals determine
their lifetime risk of these cancers and make informed healthcare decisions. Developed by Fox Chase Cancer Center, this program
provides the expertise of physicians, genetic counselors and nurses.
-
DEXA Scanning: Densitometry is a painless procedure that measure bone density, an accurate predictor for osteoporosis. Since many women
with a higher risk of breast cancer should not use estrogen therapies, determining a risk for bone weakness is important.
